Morenci’s Casillas awarded Ed Doherty Medallion

PHOENIX, Ariz. – November 2, 2021 – The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 11 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™. Six players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, October 29, 2021: Treyson Bourguet (Sr. QB, Salpointe Catholic); Michael Casillas (Sr. RB, Morenci); Jake Lambert (Sr. RB/LB, Empire); Parker McClure (Sr. LB, Red Mountain); Zecheriah Owens (So. QB, Glendale); and Zac Swanson (Sr. DE, Brophy).  

Two of the six players were named on the 55-player Week 3 Watch List™ released on September 7, 2021. All six players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 18, 2021, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.  

Details on their individual performances on October 29th are as follows: 

Treyson Bourguet – Sr. QB – Salpointe Catholic   

In the Lancers 45-7 win over Buena, Bourguet was 12/22 for 184yds and 5TDs as Salpointe took control of the 5A Southern region. 

Michael Casillas – So. RB – Morenci 

In clinching a 2A playoff spot for the Wildcats in the 33-19 win over Pima, Casillas rushed 22 times for 225yds and 2TDs, closing the regular season with 1,547yds and 21TDs. 

Jake Lambert – Sr. RB/LB – Empire 

Lambert rushed 33 times for 216yds and 2 TDs, and added 10 tackles and 3 TFL in the Ravens’ 27-7 win over Amphitheater. 

Parker McClure – Sr. LB – Red Mountain  

McClure set the tone defensively in the Mountain Lions’ 23-21 upset win over Queen Creek by recording 11 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 fumble caused and recovered a fumble. 

Zecheriah Owens – So. QB – Glendale 

In a 33-21 win over St. Mary’s, Owens went 15/21 passing for 273yds and 3TDs, rushed for 46yds and another TD as the Cardinals took over sole possession of first place in the region. 

Zac Swanson – Sr. DE – Brophy 

In the Broncos’ 33-21 win over Centennial, Swanson made his presence felt with 3 tackles, 1 TFL, sack and blocked a punt which he returned for a TD.
