Monday’s dust storm causes four-vehicle crash

GRAHAM COUNTY — The dust storm that blew through Graham County on Monday caused a four-vehicle collision that sent one person to the hospital.

A driver was traveling south on Brookerson Road, near Briggs Road, when the strong winds created a dust cloud with zero visibility. She stopped her vehicle in the roadway, waiting for the dust to clear.

A second vehicle, also traveling southbound, did not see the stopped vehicle and rear-ended it, pushing the first vehicle into another stopped vehicle.

A third vehicle traveling south on Brookerson, did not see the other two vehicles or the previous collision, causing the third vehicle to rear-end the second, and sending that vehicle in the first, causing the first vehicle to spin around.

The driver of the first vehicle said she was suffering severe neck pain and could not move. She was transported to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle said he was not injured, and the driver of the third vehicle said he had minor neck pain and showed burns where his airbag deployed. Passengers in the third vehicle reported a laceration on the nose, pain in extremities and one complained of chest pain.

The fourth vehicle departed the scene before Graham County Sheriff’s deputies arrived.

There no signs of impairment by any of the drivers and no citations were issued.
