WASHINGTON, D.C. — The City of Safford is waiting on the president’s signature to access more than $2.3 million in funding, courtesy of Senators Mark Kelly and Ruben Gallego.

The funds are part of three bipartisan bills addressing law enforcement, water and the environment passed by the Senate.

Safford is to receive $2.1 million to replace water mains that have been in operation since the 1930s. The upgrade is expected to improve water delivery reliability to more than 3,500 residents.

Safford will also receive $250,000 for a new Safford Police mobile command center vehicle, which can be used to assist all agencies in Graham County.

It’s the only two projects listed for Graham or Greenlee counties of the $32.1 million included in the bills by Gallego and Kelly.

In a prepared release, Kelly said, “These investments are about making sure Arizona communities have what they need to keep people safe and build for the future. From upgrading water systems to getting first responders reliable equipment, these projects, shaped by local leaders, will make a real difference for families and communities across our state. I’m proud to deliver this funding and will keep fighting to make sure Arizona communities get ahead.”

“I’m proud to have fought to secure more than $32 million for Arizona projects. This funding shows exactly how Congressional spending should work, directing federal dollars toward projects that solve real problems in our state, like supporting the City of Chandler’s water supply wells. In a state where water is everything, this investment will help strengthen long-term water security for families and businesses. I’m grateful to the local leaders who worked closely with our office to get these projects across the finish line, and I look forward to seeing shovels hit the ground in Arizona,” Gallego said.
