THATCHER — The public is invited to participate in two events Friday afternoon, with a chance to learn more about what’s happening in the community.

The first is the Southeast Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce luncheon mixer at sponsor Eastern Arizona College. The event, which starts with registration at 11 a.m., will feature guest speaker Lea Marquez Peterson, who is chair of the Arizona Corporation Commission and the first Hispanic woman to serve in a statewide position in the state state’s history.

The Hispanic Chamber’s lists its mission as, “To promote the success of Hispanic-owned businesses by facilitating business relationships, economic development and sharing of knowledge for the benefit of the State of Arizona and the growth and success of the members of our Chamber.”

Cost is $5 for members, $10 for non-members and includes lunch.

The next event is at the Graham County Senior Center, and it’s a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the federal Senior Nutrition Program.

“It starts at 11:30 a.m., and we have a few people speaking that day,” said Stephanie Nabor, executive director for Southeastern Arizona Community Unique Services (SEACUS). “Lunch will be provided (with) cake and drinks. It will be a big thing; one of the first big things we’ve done since COVID, so we’re excited.”

Also on hand will be Eden Home Health Care and the Graham County Health Department to provide information about additional services available to the public.

SEACUS provides congregate meals for those 55 and older at Senior Centers in Safford and Clifton, as well as delivering meals to the homes of qualifying seniors 60 and older through the Meals on Wheels program.

SEACUS also provides personal care to seniors, including light housekeeping duties and laundry, help with shopping and even bathing for those who qualify.

Friday’s event is open to everyone and is free to attend.
