THATCHER —The first big community event at the new Thatcher recreation complex is now on the schedule.

“The LDS Church wants to have the July 24 Pioneer Days Celebration there, so we’ve agreed to let them do that,” said Town Manager Heath Brown.

To prepare, Brown said the town will focus on improving parking at the complex, as well as upgrade the paths from the baseball fields to the new park. Brown added that town crews are continuing work on the restrooms, which will be finished by the Pioneer Days event.

Pioneer Days commemorates the 1847 cross-country trek by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, culminating in the settling of the Salt Lake Valley.

Locally, the celebration includes a number of athletic events, including a rodeo, a 5k, three-on-three basketball tournaments and volleyball tournaments.

There is also a parade, in which the church wards are encouraged to dress in 19th century clothing; followed by the community event at the park, which includes barbecue, musical performances and a fireworks show.
