PHOENIX — In Graham, Greenlee, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties, 98 percent of users are satisfied with Arizona State Parks’ nonmotorized trails.
That’s according to the 2025 Trails Plan issued by State Parks on Tuesday.
According to the supplemental report for the four counties in Southeastern Arizona, 57 percent of users are very satisfied with State Parks’ nonmotorized trails and 41 percent somewhat satisfied. For the motorized trails, 50 percent are very satisfied and 44 percent somewhat satisfied.
Users said they discovered State Parks’ nonmotorized trails mainly by word-of-mouth (61 percent), followed by trail signs (45 percent) and smart phone apps (42 percent). Digital maps (15 percent) and guide books (18 percent) were least used.
Litter and wildcat dumping were the top environmental concern of nonmotorized trail users, followed by trail erosion and damage to historical or archeological sites; while the top social concerns were vandalism, poor trail etiquette and trail closures.
Nonmotorized trail users are asking State Parks to make maintenance of existing trails the top priority, followed by provide more trail signs, and enforcing rules and regulations on trails.
