Hike to spot native plants this weekend

SAFFORD — The Arizona Native Plant Society is heading up Mount Graham this weekend.

The group is conducting a Pinaleño Mountains Saunter on Saturday, July 29.

The slow-paced walk will explore wildflowers, Engelmann spruce, Douglas fir and other plants in the area between Shannon Campground and Heliograph Peak. The walk will be about 1 mile, at an elevation of slightly more than 10,000 feet.

Those interested in joining in should meet at Graham County Fairgrounds at 8 .m. to carpool up to the entrance to Shannon Campground. Cost is free for Arizona Native Plant Society members and $5 for non-members.

Participants should wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, proper clothes and a hat. Bring sun screen, lunch and plenty of water. Well-behaved and leashed dogs are also welcome.

The Arizona Native Plant Society started in 1976 and the local branch was formed in 2019.
