SAFFORD – Everybody was Kung Fu fighting at the Safford-City Graham County Library on Wednesday.

Actually, the event was a live demonstration by students of Extreme Martial Arts, which instructs classes in Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Prior to the start of the show, the crowd and library staff could barely hold in their excitement.

“There has never been a martial arts demonstration in a library before,” Librarian Leanne McElroy said.

With the library’s summer reading program stressing the importance of getting outside and being active, the staff felt a martial arts demonstration would fit in nicely with the curriculum.

Additionally, the library’s 100th birthday is coming up in September, and this was just one more way of making things new and interesting.

Needless to say, the black belts of Extreme Martial Arts were as fast as lightning. With those high kicks and amazing leaps, they were also just a little bit frightening. However, as frightening as they may seem, they all had expert timing.
