THATCHER — The newest artwork at Eastern Arizona College hangs in a prestigious place — the office of college President Todd Haynie.

What makes the work even more special is that it was created by current student Cassie Hatch.

Haynie said he has two reasons for selecting a presidential designee from the arts program.

“One is I want to keep a constant connection with our students and what our students are doing,” he said. “The other reason is — and I was just talking to Cassie about this — when I have a visitor, whether it’s from the state, or any other agency or government, or some other VIP as it were, I like to show off what our students do. So I really love having something in this space that I can say, ‘This is connected to EAC’s students.’ ”

Lynch’s work is in charcoal and is called “Fleeting.”

“What I think it’s about is someone’s emotions,” Hatch said. “There’s a dark butterfly and a light butterfly, and both are missing parts of their wings. The dark butterfly is just a negative emotion that you need to let go; that needs to fly away. And the happier emotion, which is the lighter butterfly, is the one that’s going into the sun, and it’s happy and feels more free.”

Hatch’s work will hang in the office of the president through the next semester.
