SAFFORD — The Gila Watershed Partnership is looking for a few teens who want to spend their Spring Break helping the environment and earning a little extra money at the same time.

“I’ve learned a lot of things out in the field,” said Lauren Basteen, who is volunteering with GWP through Americorps. “I never really used a chainsaw; that was interesting. We got to cut down some invasive trees, so we cut down some salt cedars at one of our sites. That was pretty cool; I’ve never done that before.”

Thanks to funding from OneAZ Credit Union, GWP is hiring five people between the ages of 16 and 20 to work alongside GWP and BLM as part of the Southeastern Arizona Youth Land Stewardship Program.

In an e-mail, Dr. Sarah Sayles, executive director for GWP, said the SEAYLS Program “is a great resume builder, and most of our participants come back every year.”

Those selected will work March 13-17 and be paid $450 for the week, with the team lead being paid $550.

Deadline to apply is Feb, 28. Go to S. E. A.Y.L.S. Spring, 2023 Application (google.com).
