Graham County Health Department reports upswing in COVID cases

SAFFORD — COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Graham County, though the actual number of cases wasn’t made immediately available.

In communication with Gila Valley Central, Graham County Health Department Public Health Nurse Supervisor Melissa Lunt said, “Upon interview, the cases have mild to moderate symptoms and a few have required hospitalization. We had one unvaccinated case who passed away.”

Lunt said the Health Department is continuing surveillance and case investigation, plus calling for quarantine of close contacts to cases. She added that most of the positive cases the Health Department is seeing come from testing at Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center, which offers testing Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to noon, and from the hospital’s Emergency Department.

Lunt said the Health Department continues to recommend vaccinations, and those not feeling well to stay at home rather than go to work. “The main goal is to negate deaths and minimize hospitalizations,” Lunt said.
