CLIFTON — The Gila Valley Hiking Club is making the trek to Greenlee County for the next hike.

The Club will hike Negro Slot Canyon on Saturday, Jan. 8.

The 2.5-mile hike starts along the Gila River and eventually passes under an old railroad bridge. The big challenge is squeezing under a large bolder before climbing out into open space on top of a mesa.

Hikers are asked to meet at 8 a.m. in the DRG Technologies east parking lot for carpooling to the hike’s starting location. Hikers are reminded to bring at least 1.5 liters of water, snacks or a light lunch and sunscreen. Wear good hiking shoes, long pants and a hat. With temperatures predicted in the upper 50s to low 60s, dressing in layers is recommended.

Return to Graham County is expected to be in the early afternoon.
