Freeport bonuses good for local economy

SAFFORD — Employees at Freeport McMoRan’s Safford and Morenci mining operations were recently informed that financial bonuses are resuming in 2021.

“It’s no secret that, every other Saturday, the Freeport employees get their paychecks and go and shop. So it’s great for all the local retailers, for our local services, when Freeport employees get better paychecks,” said Vance Bryce, executive director for the Graham County Chamber of Commerce.

The bonus program was suspended in April 2020 at the start of the pandemic.

Freeport also announced it was reinstating the payment of dividends on its common stock. However, there is no word yet on whether the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation will resume its Graham and Greenlee Community Investment Fund programs.
