SAFFORD — Arizona State Parks wants people to get out of the house to celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States.

Roper Lake State Park will host a free First Day Hike on Jan. 1, part of the First Day Hike series at state parks across the state.

The hike will take place on the .75-mile Mariah Mesa Trail and begin at 9 a.m.

Jan. 1 will also be one of the last days to take part in the Holiday Ornament Trail at Roper Lake State Park.

Visitors to the state park can stop at the visitor’s center and select an ornament to write a personalized message. The ornaments will then be placed along the hiking trail for all to view.

Visitors may bring their own ornaments but State Parks cannot accept breakable or glass ornaments.

The Holiday Ornament Trail runs until Jan. 2.
