SAFFORD — Multiple groups are teaming to help keep kids fed this summer.

The free summer meal program returns Monday, June 1, at Safford Middle School, and will run until Friday, July 10. Breakfast will be served Monday through Friday, from 7-9 a.m., and lunch 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meals are free for any child under the age of 18, regardless of where the child attends school. Meals are also available for adults to purchase.

In addition, Gila Valley Samaritan Home, Our Neighbor’s Farm and Pantry, St. Vincent DePaul and the River Church Impact Center are continuing the Homeless School Child Project.

The groups provide backpacks to unhoused children, filled with items the child needs for over the weekend.

The project provides:

  • Food assistance, including ready-to-eat and non-perishable food items
  • Hygiene supplies including soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and personal care items
  • Clothing
  • Emergency support and resource referrals for families when appropriate
  • Connections to additional services and community resources

All the nonprofit organizations are accepting donations of needed items for area children.
