Frank Perry Smith departed this earthly life on October 17, 2024, after courageously enduring a life of unique trials that endeared him to many people he met along his journey through life.
Frank was born in Safford, Arizona on October 4, 1966, the sixth child of Maxine Ellsworth Smith and Ivan “Bud” Smith. Although he experienced declining health during the past year, he was able to enjoy his 58th birthday with cake and ice cream, celebrating with his beloved care givers, roommates, and friends from GCRC. He was born exactly 19 years after his oldest brother, and ten years after his youngest sister. His mom often said, “Frank taught his father how to be a dad”, and “Frank-O” became his dad’s special buddy. He is beloved by his brothers and sisters, and loved having his sisters come from out of town to visit him and take him to Walmart. He loved the ice cream treats and Mountain Dew his brothers gave him. A special treat was going to the movies with his siblings. Frank was handsome and lovable, with a sparkle in his eye that revealed a little streak of mischievousness.
There was uncertainty and uncharted new experiences for Maxine and the family as they cared for this sweet newborn with Down Syndrome. Her dedicated care kept him healthy and he was able to progress through Safford Schools until age 22. She and friend Etta Smith, his roommate Lincoln’s mom, were instrumental in getting a local chapter of the National ARC program started in Graham County, which later developed into GCRC. Frank enjoyed participating in Special Olympics for many years and loved the holiday dances held at work. He gained a host of friends working at the thrift store on Safford Main Street.
He was delighted to move into a group home in October 2017, after both parents were deceased. He thrived on going to work each day, learning to make his own lunch, and collecting movies and cassette tapes. He loved all things Star Wars, and listened to western songs his parents liked. Frank was short in stature with a king sized spirit and personality. His wink and smile spoke volumes. We would love to see the glorious reunion he is now having with his Mom and Dad.
Frank is survived by: his siblings, Brian (Patsy) Smith of Safford; Cathy (Dave) Horner of Lakeside, California; Don (Laurie) Smith of Safford; Beverley (Evan) Johnson of Mesa; and Amy Marshall of Vista, California. His many nieces and nephews have fond memories of Frank.
We wish to give special thanks to GCRC staff, especially Betsy, his work supervisor for many years; Jimmy, who cared for him daily; and all other staff care givers at his home, and those from Eden Health Hospice.
A graveside service for Frank will be conducted Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. at the Graham Cemetery.
Private family services will be conducted at a later date.
