CLIFTON — Wildland firefighters are working to prevent the spread of a more-than 4,000-acre fire in northern Greenlee County.

The Foote fire in located in rugged, inaccessible terrain in the Blue Range Primitive Area, and there are no structures under threat, so firefighters are operating under a confine-contain strategy and letting the fire burn itself out.

The fire, which started June 14 from a lightning strike, is currently at 4,553 acres.

Firefighters said smoke will be visible and there could be temporary closures of U.S. Highway 191 to protect safety of firefighters working on the highway’s edge.
