THATCHER, Ariz.—Eastern Arizona College’s Chamber Orchestra (EACCO) will present An Evening of Baroque Music on Wednesday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m., in the EAC Activities Center – Lee Little Theater. The free concert will be conducted by EAC orchestra professor, Franklin Alvarez.
According to Baroque.com, the term baroque is derived from the Portuguese barroco, or “oddly shaped pearl,” the term “baroque” has been widely used since the nineteenth century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750. Comparing some of music history’s greatest masterpieces to a misshapen pearl might seem strange to us today, but to the nineteenth century critics who applied the term, the music of Bach and Handel’s era sounded overly ornamented and exaggerated. Having long since shed its derogatory connotations, “baroque” is now simply a convenient catch-all for one of the richest and most diverse periods in music history.
The concert program will include Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 by Johann Sebastian Bach, The Water Music by George Frideric Handel, Oboe Concerto in D minor by Alessandro Marcello, Les fontaines de Versailles by Michel-Richard de Lalande, Three Minuets by Johann Sebastian Bach, Sinfonia “Al Santo Sepolcro” by Antonio Vivaldi, Sinfonia in G major by Giovani Battista Sammartini, Arrival of the Queen of Sheba by George Frideric Handel, and Sonata in D minor by Francesco Maria Veracini.
