GRAHAM COUNTY — Just one day after volunteers spent their Saturday cleaning the Gila River banks near the Pima Bridge, Graham County Sheriff’s deputies found people dumping trash upriver.

On Sunday, Sept. 10, at about 4:15 p.m., deputies found two adults and one child tossing household trash along the river north of Safford Bowl.

The adult man claimed he didn’t know it was illegal to litter in the desert and along the river, while the adult woman did not respond to the deputies’ questions.

Deputies directed the adults to pick up the trash and load it back into the rented trailer they were using. Both of the adults received a citation for littering.

Littering is a class 2 misdemeanor unless the trash weighs 300 pounds or more, then it becomes a class 6 felony.
