DAR Scholarship Asks for Student’s Thoughts On Constitutional rights

Three Thatcher High School winners from last year’s DAR Scholarship Patriotic Essay Contest were: (L-R) Brooklyn Dorr, Lanthan Nelson and Carson Richins

The Gila Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is increasing their number of scholarship offerings from three to four valued at $600, $500, $400, and $300. These scholarships apply to students of any grade level attending Mount Graham, Safford or Thatcher high schools and taking EAC dual enrollment, general education classes. This also applies to homeschooled students at the high school level. The money from the scholarship can be used to offset expenses for books and tuition.

The topic for this year’s essay is: The U.S. Constitution guarantees citizens’ rights. Choose two of these rights and explain why they are important to you.

“With this topic, I’m hoping it will generate interest in the young people to look closely at our Constitution,” said Bonnie Briscoe with the Gila Valley DAR. “The value of an essay is that they get to share their opinions. They’re not just doing research but forming their own opinions for that essay.”

Essays must be 450-750 words, typed, double spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font, with standard margins.

Entries must include a cover sheet with name; contact information including mailing address, e-mail address and phone number; grade level; school; classes enrolled in at EAC; and title of the essay.

Three judges will review each essay for content, clarity, organization and patriotism.

Winners will be asked to read their essays during the DAR Constitution Week program, Sept. 21, and on Voice of the Valley on KATO AM 1230.
