Crews stop progress of wildland fire near portal at 15 acres

Portal, AZ – Authorities say forward progress has been stopped on a 15-acre wild land fire in southeastern Arizona, but a hiking group was asked to leave the area as a precaution.  The staff at the Southwest Research Center were also asked to leave the area while firefighters battled the blaze.

Cochise County Sheriff’s officials say the fire was spotted Sunday morning in the Portal area.They say one cabin was threatened before state and federal fire crews responded.The Cochise County Sheriff’s Department and Portal rescue responded along with US Forest Service and Douglas Fire Department.

It’s not immediately clear how the fire started.
