Cough leads to crash

THATCHER — A coughing fit resulted in a single-vehicle accident with injuries.

On Oct. 22, the driver, identified as Heather Elkins, reportedly told Graham County Sheriff’s deputies that she was northbound on Reay Lane, just north of the Thatcher Bridge, traveling between 35 and 40 miles per hour, when she started to cough.

She then reportedly told the deputy the next thing she knew her vehicle was in a ditch and she was suffering a great deal of pain. She exited her vehicle through the passenger door and was next to her vehicle when deputies arrived.

Elkins reportedly admitted to smoking medical marijuana earlier in the day, but was unable to produce a medical marijuana card when requested by the deputy, reportedly telling the deputy she did not know where it was at that time.

Elkins was transported to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center with minor lacerations and abrasions to her arms and sides, as well as a possible dislocated hip.
