SAFFORD — Lindy Fuller said, as a nurse, she has good idea on what to expect when she delivers her first baby in June.

However, father Jai Fuller said he was surprised about some of the information he learned at the 10th Community Baby Shower in the programming room at the Safford City-Graham County Library on Friday.

“Oh yeah, the size of a baby’s stomach; I had no idea that it was like this small, then that big and then that big,” Jai said.

The Community Baby Shower is a collaborative effort between the library and First Things First to help parents deal with the first few years of their new baby’s life.

“The big goals of the Community Baby Shower are to connect families with resources, to provide them with material they might need or want for their baby, and to give them skills they’re going to need in infant care,” said Elizabeth Henley, Early Literacy coordinator for the library.

There were giveaways of items new parents need, such as diapers and formula; and vendors included health-care providers, Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center, Easter Seals Blake Foundation, the Graham County Health Department, Mt. Graham Safe House, Child and Family Resources, the Safford Lions Club offering free eye screenings, and nursing students from Eastern Arizona College who helped teach new parents about proper diaper changing and swaddling.
