Case count continues to rise in prisons

SAFFORD — Graham County Health Department reported 228 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday.

Almost all the new cases — 222 — were in the 85546 zip code, and Health Department officials said that in that zip code “most positive cases are from correctional facilities.”

There were three new cases each in the 85552 and 85543 zip codes.

That brings the total number of new cases in January thus far to 1,493, which is 32 percent of all the cases the county has experienced since the start of the pandemic last year.

The Health Department also announced two coronavirus-related deaths Thursday, a Safford resident and a resident of Pima. Both were over the age of 65.

That brings the total number of deaths in January thus far to nine and 60 since the start of the pandemic.

Greenlee County

Greenlee County Health Department reported two new cases Wednesday evening.

That brings the county total number of new cases in January thus far to 87, and 502 since the start of the pandemic.
