Roy Corona and the Pima Lady Roughriders are looking for their third straight 2A State Championship this weekend and it all starts at 9am Friday morning at Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.

The Lady Riders will take on San Carlos in the first game of the day. It will be the first meeting of the season between the two. The Lady Braves come into the game with a 31-2 record, Pima is 26-2. Coincidentally, both teams lost to the same two teams this year, Alchesay and Thatcher.

Pima is led in scoring by Ashlynn Chlarson at 20.6 points per game. Jayci Mclain adds 10.2 points a game for the ‘Riders. For San Carlos, they are led by Ellysia Cutter with 18.4 points per game and Camryn Longstreet with nearly 13 points per game.

At the #3 seed the Pima Roughriders are the highest ranked team left in the boys tournament. They will face Arizona Lutheran Academy for the second time this season. The Roughriders beat the Coyotes 43-40 in the season opener on December 2nd in Phoenix.

Pima defeated Veritas Prep 58-38 and Trivium Prep 52-43 last weekend to move into this week’s semifinals. ALA got past Arete Prep 70-43 before upsetting Rancho Salano Prep 60-51 in the quarterfinals.

Pima doesn’t have published stats but in their two playoff wins last weekend they were led by the post play of Seth Russell and the midrange game of Garrett Curtis. ALA is led by sophomore Stephan Iron Shell at 20.6 points per game.
