THATCHER — Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10385 is hosting a barbecue throwdown Saturday at the post in Thatcher.
The challenge is to see who barbecues the best ribs in the Gila Valley, but Jeff Czady with the VFW said there’s a secondary mission to the event, and that’s getting veterans to the post to address their needs.
“Look at what they’re doing and what they’re needing; and then try to bring in the actual people to actually support as well,” Czady said.
To that end, the VFW Post is making office space available to a service officer who will help veterans navigate the various federal and state systems for benefits and services.
Entries are still being accepted to cook in the Barbecue Throwdown. Participants must bring their own grills/smokers, ribs and prepare a minimum of two racks.
A panel of judges will determine one set of winners, while the public also gets a voice with the People’s Choice winner. The VFW has raised $500 in prize money, and tastings are available for $20.
To really encourage attendance, the VFW Auxiliary’s annual Nickel Auction will also take place that Saturday.
“It usually draws a very big crowd,” said VFW’s Jeff Morris. “Our auxiliary makes most of their money for the year, to support them, from this event.”
And the winner of the rifle drawing will take place right after the rib winners are announced. The rifle is a Savage Action 2 .308, with scope and rings, and tickets will be sold until 6 p.m.
Following the announcement of winners, the Sonja Watkins Country Band will take the stage and play until the end of the event at 10 p.m.
