Assault charges for man who spit on security guard

SAFFORD — A man who didn’t want to stay in the hospital instead found himself in jail.

Safford Police officers responded to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center following reports of a disorderly patient in the intensive care unit. They found the man strapped to a bed, fighting with staff.

Staff explained the man wished to be discharged against medical advice and was fighting them as they attempted to detach lines.

During the struggle, the man spit in the face of a hospital security guard, as well as spitting twice more and hitting the guard in the shirt, before staff was able to put a mask on the man.

The guard said he wished to pursue charges against the man and, once the man was discharged, he was arrested and booked into Graham County Jail on charges of aggravated assault.
