SAFFORD — Arizona State Prison Complex-Safford has the second-highest number of inmates as compared to capacity in the state.
That’s according to the April Data Report issued by the Arizona Department of Corrections.
ASPC-Safford has a capacity of 1,863 men, with 1,703 rated beds and 160 temporary. As of April, Safford was housing 1,800 inmates, 97 percent of capacity.
Only ASPC-Yuma was greater, at 101 percent of capacity in April, with 4,755 male inmates to 4,690 beds.
Behind Safford was ASPC-Tucson, at 94-percent capacity, with a population of 4,807 to 5,122 beds. Phoenix is at 75 percent capacity, followed by Douglas at 74 percent, Lewis 66 percent, and Eyman and Winslow both at 55 percent.
For females, Lewis is at 9 percent capacity and Perryville at 74 percent. Douglas had no female prisoners in April.
April was the third month in a row that ASPC-Safford saw inmate population growth, with 1,738 male prisoners in February (93 percent of capacity) and 1,758 prisoners in March (94 percent of capacity).
Of the 1,406 persons committed to all state prison complexes in April, 402 were committed for drug possession, followed by 210 for assault, 130 for DUI and 103 for weapons offenses.
