SAFFORD — Saturday morning saw sunny skies, temperatures in the mid-70s and a light wind out of the southwest. In other words, the perfect conditions for a run.
Safford Airport hosted the inaugural Run on the Runway 5K and 1-mile Fun Run, with about two-dozen runners for the 5K and another dozen young families taking part in the fun run.
“You know, it’s our first year, but I think we had a really good turnout and I’m really happy,” said Airport Manager Cameron Atkins.
Jackson Hackett, 17, a high school cross country runner, was the first 5K runner to cross the finish line in a time of 18 minutes, 30 seconds. He said he was glad to have a flat path to run.
“That was the best part of this course, was that I never had to go up a hill,” Hackett said.
The event was free to enter but donations were accepted in support of the Safford High School Booster Club.
“I’m really thankful for the airport inviting us to come and participate, and welcome all of our students,” said Booster Club co-Vice President Sarah Bingham.
The days’ event started with the Safford High School Marching Band and Cheer Squad performing the school’s fight song, and the national anthem sung by Zaylie Windsor. Volunteering to assist were members of the Safford football and volleyball teams.
