AIA Executive Board approves return to play guidelines

PHOENIX — Over 100 athletic directors, administrators and media members watched today’s AIA Executive Board meeting on Zoom this afternoon.

After a nearly two hour executive session, the Board approved the most recent updates to the return to play guidelines suggested by the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.

Those updates can be found by clicking here.

Executive Director David Hines said, “We have reached the time to get football players in helmets and start practice.”

Hopi Athletic Director Ricky Greer added, “There is no change to the timeline.”

Executive Board President and Safford Athletic Director, Toni Corona, confirmed that in a text to GilaValleyCentral. “There is no change to the AIA timeline for staggered start for fall sports,” she said.

Fall golf has already begun. Volleyball started practice on August 31st with their first game on September 21st. Football can start practice on September 7th with games starting October 2nd.

The allowance of fans into contests will be a local decision. Locales across the state will be in different timelines of their own phase-in plans. School administrators will always have the most recent information to use for their own situations.
