Active coronavirus cases on the rise in Gila Valley

SAFFORD — The number of active COVID-19 cases in Graham County has grown by nearly four dozen over the past week.

That’s according to data released Wednesday by the Graham County Health Department.

There are 117 active cases as of Aug. 11, up from 77 on Aug. 4.

There were six new cases reported Wednesday, bringing the total in August thus far to 80. That’s just 10 shy of all the cases during the entire month of July.

There was also a coronavirus-related death reported Wednesday, the second in August thus far.

That brings the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Graham County since the start of the pandemic to 89.

Children 12 old and older are now able to receive a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine starting Thursday, Aug. 12. The youth vaccinations will be available for free at the county’s COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Safford’s Main Street, on Thursdays and Fridays, from 5-7 p.m.

Those 18 and older may receive the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines for free Mondays and Wednesdays.
