SAFFORD — The City of Safford wants the public to weigh in on what mural should be painted on the exterior wall of the Library.
During its most recent meeting, the City Council voted 6-1 to delay making a selection of a library mural until July 27, in order to get input from the public. The dissenting vote was cast by Councilman Steve McGaughey.

During March and April, the library solicited proposals from mural artists and three finalists were selected — Camila Ibarra, of Tucson; Clyde Thompson, of Tempe; and Molly Keen, from the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
On Monday, June 22, the council viewed the proposals from the artists, with the council members who spoke favoring the works of Ibarra and Keen, both of which incorporate books as well as referencing the adjoining railroad tracks in their work. Thompson used birds to symbolize sharing in his proposal.

“Is there a way that, maybe, you could put this on a website and do like a vote, so that people on Facebook could vote, too?” asked Council member Dusti Brantner. “Let’s get more community input.”

The budget for the mural is $40,000 and is to be completed by October.
