SAFFORD — The future of art was on display at the Safford High School small gymnasium.

The Safford High School Student Art Show took place May 5-7 and there were more than 32 pieces the judges presented with first place, while the public voted for five winners.

Taking the Best of Show in the community choice awards, and a judges’ first in 3-D art, was senior Angel Holguin, who said she wants to become an architect.

“For what I want to do, it’s kind of art-ish as well. For right now, it’s more of a hobby,” Holguin said.

Winners weren’t limited to upper classmen. The judges awarded freshman Braelyn Loya two first places — for her dragon’s eye piece and a colored pencil mandala she created with Arabella Medina.

She said she was surprised to receive first place awards.

“A little bit, for sure,” Loya said, “but if you put in the effort, for sure.”

Loya said art is very much a hobby for her, as she wants to pursue a career in the sciences and, hopefully one day, become an astronaut.

Twenty-two individuals and families helped sponsor the art show, as well as two local businesses — JD’s Grillhouse and Roycycled Treasures — and the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties.
