Safford, AZ — The Safford Unified School District has officially welcomed Ishmael MacNeil as the new head football coach for Safford High School. The district’s governing board approved the hire at its April 10 meeting, signaling a fresh start for the Bulldogs heading into the 2025 season.

MacNeil takes over for Bob Park, who led the program for four seasons from 2021 to 2024. During Park’s tenure, Safford posted an overall record of 18–24 and made two playoff appearances. His best season came in 2021, when the Bulldogs finished 6–5. While results varied year to year, Park kept the program in postseason contention and helped maintain a competitive presence in the 3A South region.

MacNeil brings a reputation for turning programs around. He most recently served as the head coach at Wickenburg High School, where over three seasons he compiled a 14–17 record. His Wranglers squad showed consistent year-over-year improvement, culminating in a 7–4 campaign and a trip to the 3A playoffs as the No. 12 seed in the 2024–2025 season — their first postseason appearance since 2018.

In an exclusive meeting with GilaValleyCentral, MacNeil said he expects to be in Safford full time around the beginning of June, after fulfilling his teaching and coaching contract at Wickenburg. He plans to begin shaping the Bulldogs program over the summer in preparation for fall.

Before stepping into coaching, MacNeil was a collegiate linebacker. He started his career at Earlham College and later transferred to Linfield University in Oregon, where he wrapped up his playing days as a member of the 2017 Wildcats. He is also a graduate of Bandera High School in Texas — a program that, coincidentally, shares the same Bulldog mascot and blue-and-white color scheme as Safford.

While it remains to be seen how MacNeil will shape Safford’s offensive identity, his 2024 Wickenburg team leaned heavily on a run-first approach. That squad rushed for nearly 2,000 yards on the season — compared to just 367 passing yards — and featured a lead back who topped 1,800 yards and 20 touchdowns. The offense prioritized physicality and ball control, hallmarks of a power-run or wing-T style system.

Safford will open the 2025 football season on August 22 with a road matchup against Morenci High School. It will mark MacNeil’s debut as head coach and the beginning of a new chapter for the Bulldogs on the field.
