CLIFTON — The Gila Valley Hiking Club will be taking one its longest hikes of the year this Saturday.
The club will hike the old Morenci Southern Railroad bed to the San Francisco River, in Greenlee County.
The desert hike, over exposed terrain, will cover 7.2 miles round trip, following the narrow-gauge railroad line that served the mine from 1900 to 1922.
Hikers will meet at the DRG parking lot Saturday, at 8 a.m., for the car-pool trip to the hike’s start.
Hikers are asked to bring 1.5-2 liters of water, snacks and lunch, a hat, sunscreen and sturdy walking shoes. A walking stick is recommended.
