SAFFORD — A new sports arena is coming to the Gila Valley.

Gila Valley Disc Golf Club announced Friday it is partnering with Eastern Arizona College to develop a new 18-hole disc golf course on the Discovery Park campus.

The new course is designed by disc golf pro Pete Ulibarri, and will be located on 25 acres in the northeast corner of the Discovery Park campus. GVDGC members and campus stuff will soon start clearing the area for development.

“We are excited to be able to begin the process of developing a disc golf destination course in the Gila Valley,” GVDGC President Todd Draper said in a prepared statement. “This course will be capable of hosting state and regional level tournaments when it is complete.”

The course requires 18 tee pads and 18 baskets, and will be paid for entirely through fund-raising and volunteerism. Cost is estimated at about $18,000, and individual holes are available for sponsorship of $1,000 each.
