1 in 3 Parents Skipping Flu Shots as Kids Head Back to School, Report Finds

The nationwide survey found 1 in 3 parents don’t plan to get their child a flu shot this winter and 41% admit to sending their child to school or daycare when they probably should’ve stayed home due to cold symptoms.

  • Top reasons for sending sick kids to school: symptoms seemed mild and no childcare available
  • 37% of parents only keep kids home when they have a fever
  • 32% aren’t confident which preventative care visits their child needs each year
  • Over 1 in 10 say their child has missed preventive care in the last three years

“We worry most about bacterial infections on top of these respiratory viruses, so if a child develops eye swelling, has breathing difficulty or becomes less responsive, these should prompt a visit to the Emergency Department,” says Dr. Ravi Jhaveri, Lurie Children’s, Division Head, Infectious Diseases.
