WILLCOX — The suspected shooter in a murder in Willcox late last month is believed to have fled to Mexico.

Willcox Department of Public Safety announced an arrest warrant has been issued for Gerardo de Jesus Arellano Gomez on charges of first-degree murder and other felony counts.

Police say it’s believed Gomez crossed the international border in the early morning hours of April 1. The department is working with the Mexican Consulate, Interpol, FBI and U.S. Marshal’s Office to track down and extradite the suspect.

The shooting occurred Tuesday, March 31, at about 9:30 p.m. on the 500 block of South Curtis Avenue. The victim has been identified as a Mexican citizen and police are working with the Mexican Consulate to notify next-of-kin.

A second suspect in the case was apprehended following witness interviews and his alleged confession of providing a handgun to Gomez. That person was booked into Cochise County Jail on charges of accessory to commit murder in the first degree and accessory to commit attempted murder in the first degree.

That suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
