Wildfire in Duncan declared contained

DUNCAN — Duncan Valley Rural Fire was able to contain the first wildfire of the season Monday.

Duncan Fire was alerted of the fire on the Gila River bottom, near the State Route 75 bridge, at about 2:30 p.m. About one hour later, the wind caused the fire to flare and start spot fires on the north side of the river and the west side of the bridge.

With assistance from Virden, Clifton, Hidalgo County, Cliff and Lordsburg fire departments, the fire was declared 100 percent contained by 8:30 p.m.; however, it will be allowed to burn within the boundaries of the fire and crews will monitor to ensure no further spread.

Size of the fire was not immediately disclosed.

Duncan Fire also reported there had been several fire starts in that area over the past few months.
