DUNCAN — The United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties wants to help increase access to medical care in the Duncan area.

The United Way presented a check for $100,000 to Canyonlands Healthcare, to help development of a new health center.

“Lots of folks use the health center, the services there, and also the pharmacy there has been very popular and very helpful for the community. That’s been a newer service that we started to provide there, which really helps save people in travel,” said C.J. Hansen, Canyonlands CEO.

The existing health center will remain open while construction of a new health center takes place in an adjacent lot. Once the new health center is open, the existing center will be demolished and the land on which it sits will be used for the new center’s customer parking.

Hansen said construction of a new center is estimated at about $1 million and the goal is to have construction complete by fourth quarter of 2023.

Denise Benton, executive director for United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties, said the grant is made possible thanks to donors, including the employees of Freeport-McMoRan and the City of Safford, the Freeport Foundation and individual donors.

“We are very grateful for the money they donate; we are just stewards of that money,” she said. “Be assured that the money you receive is coming from people counting on you to give back to the community, which is exactly what you are doing.”
