FORT THOMAS — Communication is a great deal easier for the Fort Thomas Volunteer Fire Department, courtesy of the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties and Ag West Farm Credit.

Fort Thomas Fire received two checks Wednesday — $4,500 from Ag West and $50,000 from United Way — for the purchase of new, hand-held radios

“These radios are ready for all future upgrades at Graham County,” said Fire Chief McCoy Hawkins.

The radios had been back ordered, but finally arrived and the department has put them to use.

The United Way also celebrated the new playground at Safford’s Dorothy Stinson Elementary School, which was funded with United Way grants.

In 2024, teachers Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Emery submitted a grant request for $174,950 for the playground equipment. Meanwhile the Safford Unified School District also applied for a grant of $118,000 for shade structures at the three elementary schools, and one of the structures is used to cover the new Stinson playground equipment.

Members of the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties board, the Safford Unified School District board, and teachers from Dororthy Stinson Elementary School join together Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025, to cut the ribbon for new playground equipment and a shade structure at the school. Both were funded by United Way grants.
