Unemployment in Graham under 3 percent, Greenlee lowest in state

PHOENIX — The unemployment rates in both Graham and Greenlee counties decreased in April, with both coming in under 3 percent.

 That’s according to data released Thursday by the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity.

For the 41st month in a row, the unemployment rate in Greenlee County is the lowest in the state, at 2.1 percent in April, down four-tenths of a point from March.

Graham County’s jobless rate decreased five-tenths of a percentage point, to 2.9 percent in April, giving Graham the second-lowest unemployment rate in the state, ahead of Maricopa County at 3 percent.

Graham and Greenlee are the only counties in the state with an unemployment rate under 3 percent.

The unemployment rate in Cochise County dropped six-tenths of a percentage point in April, to 4.2 percent.

Arizona’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate stayed flat in April, at 4.1 percent, as did the national unemployment rate at 4.2 percent.

Job gains were reported in nine economic sectors: Health care and social assistance (up 6,400 jobs); trade, transportation and utilities (up 3,400 jobs); professional and business services (up 2,800 jobs); leisure and hospitality (up 2,600 jobs); construction (up 2,400 jobs); private educational services (up 1,100 jobs); government (up 900 jobs); information (up 800 jobs); and natural resources and mining (up 200 jobs).

Reporting job losses were manufacturing (down 900 jobs) and financial activities (down 200 jobs).
