Unemployment down in Greenlee, up in Graham

PHOENIX — 2023 started on a good note when it comes to the unemployment rate in Greenlee County.

According to data released last Thursday by the Arizona Commerce Authority, Greenlee County held the spot as the county with the lowest unemployment in the state for 14th month in a row in December, when the unemployment rate fell one-tenth of a point, from December’s 2.4 percent to 2.3 percent in January.

Meanwhile, Graham County’s jobless increased four-tenths of a point in January, to 3.1 percent.  However, despite in the increase, Graham remains the county with the fourth-lowest unemployment in the state, behind Greenlee, Maricopa at 2.8 percent and Yavapai at 3 percent.

Nearby Cochise County also increased four-tenths of a point in January, to 4 percent.

Statewide, the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate decreased two-tenths of a point in January, down to 3.8 percent. However, that’s two-tenths higher than the unemployment rate in Arizona in January 2022. The national rate increased six-tenths of a point, to 3.9 percent.

Only two economic sectors reported job gains in January: Government (up 2,700 jobs) and natural and resources and mining (up 200 jobs).

Reporting job losses were: Trade, transportation and utilities (down 16,500 jobs); professional and business services (down 6,400 jobs); manufacturing (down 2,400 jobs); leisure and hospitality (down 2,400 jobs); financial activities (down 1,800 jobs); construction (down 1,200 jobs); education and health services (down 1,200 jobs); and information (down 500 jobs).
