SAFFORD — A number of groups came together to celebrate Earth Day last Saturday.
Members of the Safford City Council, Graham County Health Department, Safford Unified School District, Safford Parks and Recreation Committee, and Southeastern Arizona Clean and Beautiful were on-hand to watch youth members of Graham County Stars turn the first shovel of dirt for two new Ash trees in Safford’s Fireman’s Park.
“We just were thinking of something to do for Earth Day, because we didn’t really know if we did anything in the community for it,” said Kali Gluyas with Graham County Stars. “We think it’s a big deal to take care of the place that we love.”
Safford City Councilman Arnold Lopez said when it comes to the environment, the city is focusing on water conservation, as well as parks development.
Tim Linden said SECAB donated to the city the money for the trees.
“This is how we’re going to get together, and start working together to make a more beautiful committee, but it takes volunteers, too,” Linden said. “It’s usually less than a fraction of a percent of the people within the community that actually volunteer. And we need more.”
The trees will be located on either side of the walkway leading to the Fireman’s Memorial in front of the City Hall building.
