SAFFORD — For September’s First Friday event Sept. 5, Gila Watershed Partnership is going back to basics.

“We’re going to do one of the things I think is most satisfying to do at Gila Watershed Partnership, and that is we’re going to be planting plants in the ground,” said Richard Hufford with GWP. “We have 150 plants we’ve got to plant, and they’re going to be planted at Discovery Park.”

Volunteers will arrive at the GWP greenhouse at Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park Campus at 9 a.m. and given assignments. Those who RSVP at info@gwpaz.org prior to Friday will be given a snack at the end of planting.

There’s a second volunteer opportunity Saturday, in Clifton, as GWP will conduct a cleanup of the San Francisco River area.

Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. at Riverside Park for directions. Work will continue to noon and those who RSVP at infor@gwpaz.org will receive lunch provided by Nina’s Taqueria.

GWP’s work in cleaning the San Francisco has led to the river being removed from Arizona’s Threatened Rivers list.

Everyone who volunteers is encouraged to stay after lunch for the Greenlee Tourism Committee’s Big Quack Duck Race fund-raiser.

Plastic ducks are sold for $10 each or three for $25, and, at 1 p.m., the ducks will be floated one mile down the San Francisco River, from the Zorilla Bridge to the Railroad Bridge at Sidebottom Park. Purchasers of the first 15 ducks to finish will each receive prizes.

Go to visitgreenleecounty.com for more information or to purchase ducks.
