Two dead in attempted burglary in Safford

SAFFORD — Safford Police are investigating two deaths that occurred Monday.

According to a release, Safford officers responded to a burglary at 1:52 a.m. to a home on the 1200 block of Central Avenue. There, they found one of the homeowners had reportedly shot and killed the burglary suspect, identified as Miguel Garcia.

While officers were searching the home, another person was found dead in a bedroom. Cause of death and identity of that person has not yet been released.

The homeowners reported that Garcia was a neighbor and had broken into the home, threatening them with a knife. That’s when one of the homeowners reportedly retrieved a pistol and shot Garcia.

Safford Police report that it appears Garcia acted alone and investigation into the incident is ongoing.
