PHOENIX — To help speed through a major grocery chain acquisition, more than 100 Safeway and Albertson’s stores in Arizona are proposed to be sold off to an East Coast company; however, two area Safeway stores appears to be safe.

Kroger announced it would sell 579 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers in order to win approval of a $24 billion acquisition of Albertson’s, the parent company of Safeway.

The Safeway in Sierra Vista would be sold, as would the one in Globe, four in Tucson and one in Vail, along with three Tucson Albertson’s.

The Safeway stores in Thatcher and Willcox do not appear on the list of 101 stores proposed to be sold in Arizona.

C&S Wholesale Grocers is based in New Hampshire and is the parent company of Piggly Wiggly grocery stores in the South and Midwest.
