Tear gas ends barricade situation

GRAHAM COUNTY — A barricade situation ended without injury after Graham County Sheriff’s deputies deployed tear gas.

According to reports, a woman call the Sheriff’s Office on July 2 when, while visiting a friend, the friend’s significant other appeared at the residence, pointed a gun at her and told her to get off his property.

When deputies arrived, the man locked himself a camp trailer and refused to come out.

With help from Safford, Thatcher and Pima Police departments, as well as Arizona Department of Public Safety, officers set up a perimeter and continued to talk to the suspect in an effort to get him to exit peacefully. Instead, he said he would only talk to the FBI.

A search warrant was obtained and the suspect was warned if he did not exit, gas would be used. When he said he would kill himself, a tear gas canister was shot into the trailer and the suspect exited. When he would not comply with commands, he was hit with a bean-bag round.

The suspect was transported to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center, where he was medically cleared for booking into Graham County Jail. He was charged with disorderly conduct/domestic violence, disorderly conduct, disorderly conduct with a weapon/domestic violence, disorderly conduct with a weapon, threatening, aggravated assault with a weapon and resisting arrest.
