Suspect killed, DPS officer wounded in I-10 chase

WILLCOX — An Arizona Department of Public Safety officer was wounded and the subject killed following a high-speed pursuit on Interstate 10 near Willcox early Thursday morning.

After a Willcox Police officer successfully deployed a tire deflation device, the unnamed suspect fired a weapon at the DPS vehicle, striking the officer. The officer was treated for his non-life threateneing injuries at Northern Cochise County Hospital, before being flown to Tucson for trauma care.

The suspect crashed his vehicle and fled on foot and barricaded himself in another parked vehicle. He refused surrender, exited the vehicle and attempted to gain entry into a house when he was engaged by DPS, Willcox Police and Cochise County Sheriff’s officers.

Life-saving measures were performed on scene by EMS personnel, as well as at NCCH, but he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead.

The incident is under investigation by Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.
