Some winter sports practices postponed in Gila Valley

Thatcher's Brandon Napier fires a three against Pima in the 2019 EAC Holiday tournament.

COVID-19 has put a damper on many sporting events this year and now is delaying the start of winter sports at two Gila Valley schools.

In a letter to parents, Thatcher High School said, “On Monday November 9th, the Thatcher High School administration was informed that our Boys Basketball Open Gym may have been exposed to an active COVID 19 case during the week of October 5th through the 9th.  The Graham County Health Department is conducting contact tracing including members of that class beginning on Monday, November 9th.”

Boys basketball can resume their team activities on November 18th. All other winter sports are not affected.

Safford Athletic Director, Toni Corona, confirmed that Safford High School is taking a weekly approach. Boys and Girls basketball and Wrestling are considered winter sports.

“We are postponing official tryouts and will re-evaluate weekly,” she told GilaValleyCentral.

Winter tryouts and practices could of started November 9th according to AIA guidelines.
